The experience of the little school girl in a video that went viral on the social media reveals the plight of many Nigerian children from unprivileged homes. They have passion for education, but the system has failed in its responsibility to make education free for all – at least nursery, primary and secondary education.
The question now is: how many children have been sent out of school because of their inability to pay school fees? How many children have been physically abused as a result of their failure to pay their school fees promptly? How many children are permanently out of school because their parents cannot afford to pay their school fees?
It’s high time the government took decisive steps towards empowering the girl child. The girl child is the most vulnerable in this era of high level of moral decadence and socio-psychological abuse. My heart pricks when I see little children hawking from morning till the dead of the night in traffics and in odd corners. It has pathetically become the order of the day in Nigeria. Instead of being in school, they are in the streets hawking to raise money for the family. In some parts of the country, the children has been forced to become the bread winners of the family.
I therefore urge the government of President Mohammadu Buhari to declare an emergency in our education sector. Our educational system needs total overhaul. If we should continue like this, the future of this country will be in great jeopardy.
