A policeman attached to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) at Ajegunle, Lagos, yesterday killed a tanker driver at Trinity area of Apapa.
Daily Trust gathered that the driver was said to have refused to pay a sum of N1, 000 allegedly demanded by the police officer.
Other tanker drivers were said to have protested the killing of their colleague, barricading the road to Apapa and burning tyres.
A tanker driver, Danladi Usman, alleged that they were being extorted too much.
Another driver, Shehu Adamu, said killings of truck drivers by security operatives were becoming too many and that they had vowed to put an end to it.
When contacted, the spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Chike Oti, said information about the incident was still sketchy.
He said: “There was a crisis in the area and we heard that someone died in the crisis. The Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, has directed a full scale investigation into the matter and at the end of the investigation, anyone found culpable will be made to face the wrath of the law. However, the outcome of the investigation will be made known to members of the public.”
