Gunmen Attack Esa-Oke, One Killed, Several Missing

Some gunmen on Tuesday attacked Esa-Oke, a town in the Obokun Local Government Area of Osun state.

As of press time, several inhabitants of the town who ran into the bush were said to be missing.

Punch Metro gathered that the attack took place in the Onireke area, located on the outskirts of the town.

A man, said to be an employee of the Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, and identified simply as Olaniyi, was reportedly killed by the attackers.

A non-academic staff member of the college confirmed the attack to Punch Metro on the telephone.

“A list of those that ran into the bush to avoid being shot by the attackers is still being compiled,” he added.

It was also learnt that the attackers kidnapped some residents.

Security sources also confirmed that a policeman was shot by the attackers.

A resident of the town, who identified himself simply as Oladepo, also told one of our correspondents on the telephone that the identity of the attackers had yet to be established.

He said, “It is not clear yet who the attackers are and their mission. However, a worker with the state college of technology was killed. Some people are still missing. When the attack happened, some people ran into the bush. We can’t find them yet. A policeman was shot too, but he survived.”

A statement by the Director, Media and PR, Osun State College of Technology, Prince Wale Oyekanmi, read, “There was an attack on Esa-Oke Road this evening after close of work; the list of staff members of Osun State College of Technology still being held in the bush by the kidnappers are  Mr Olaleye Olalekan (Bus. Admin. Department);   Adeyeoluwa Bankole (HOD Civil Engineering);  Dr Jesuola Ajibola (Director Ventures); 4. Adenreti Chukwu (Secretary to Civil Engineering Department);  Olaniyi Emmanuel Temitope (Registry staff member (died on the spot) and  Rachael Onyinocha Akinboboye, (OSCOTECH Microfinance Bank).

“These are the names of those we can identify that are missing; we will keep you posted as event unfolds.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Folasade Odoro, could not be reached on the telephone.
