Four person narrowly escaped death on Sunday as a tanker loaded with petrol had a break failure and crushed a commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke Napep, at the busy Mbiama-Yenagoa Road, Bayelsa State.
The accident, which occurred at 10.40am around the Mopol 30 area of Akenfai, Yenagoa Local Government Area, left four persons critically injured and they are presently hospitalised.
It took the quick intervention of men of the fire service and some security agents to avert a fire outbreak and also to prevent residents from scooping fuel.
The accident caused a gridlock as vehicular movement was momentary put on hold on the busy road, leaving many motorists and church goers stranded for hours.
According to an eyewitness, who simply identified herself as Miss Ann, the break of the truck failed, making it to hit the tricycle, which had four occupants.
She said it took the intervention of some residents and security personnel, who used equipment to pull out the victims who were trapped in the tricycle.
“I am not sure the victims were dead because they were still breathing but critically injured as they were been rushed to the hospital,” she further stated.
The incident caused gridlock and slow vehicular movement along the major roads, as motorists resorted to driving against the traffic.
